New York City Marathon Route

The New York City Marathon route is laid through the streets and parks of the largest US city and passes through all five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Manhattan. The route crosses the Narrows on the longest suspension bridge in the United States, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Newtown Creek on the Pulaski Bridge, East River on the cantilever Queensboro Bridge, and the Harlem River over the Willis Avenue Bridge and Madison Avenue Bridge.

The New York City Marathon starts at the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge from Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, towards Brooklyn. The start zone is located in Fort Wadsworth, divided into 3 starting zones: blue, orange, and green.

The finish line of the NYC marathon 2022  is located in the city’s largest park, Central Park on West Drive in Manhattan.

There are marks on the track every mile and every 5 km.

New York Marathon Qualifying Times and Participation

You can participate in the marathon if you have taken part in the New York marathon lottery, participated in charity programs, or used the services of an official tour operator. The deadline for applying for the marathon is usually mid-February. Getting a place in the marathon is much more difficult for New Yorkers. They must first compete in nine qualifying races in the previous year in order to qualify for the New York City Marathon. In addition, everyone (both in New York and outside of it) has a chance to participate in the marathon if they meet the qualifying time standards.

New York Marathon Qualifying Times for Men and Women

The cost of the slot includes: a number with a timekeeping chip, a New Balance branded race t-shirt, a bag with souvenirs from sponsors, transfer to the start from New York and New Jersey, storage and transportation from start to finish of personal belongings of participants on the day of the race, a thermal cape (poncho) after the finish, food and refreshment areas, toilets during the race and after the race, pacemaker service, musical support on the track, a finisher’s medal, online race results, participant diploma with finish time (in electronic form after the announcement of the official race results), video from the track, and medical assistance if necessary.

Road Closures NYC Marathon

On the day of the marathon, the area around Central Park is completely dominated by the race. There are often large traffic jams in and around the park as some roads are closed.

Where to Watch the Marathon?

The New York City Marathon runs through all five New York City boroughs, from Staten Island to Manhattan. You can watch at the finish line, but you will need to buy tickets for one of the stands. A good location is at the end of the Queensboro Bridge, where participants run to First Avenue. From there, you can head to Central Park, which is only a 15-minute walk away.
