Event Details

First Annual Run for the Shark Fun Run. Runners can choose between a 5K run or 9K (due to construction on Omaha St) distance. The race will start just outside the outdoor 50 Meter pool at the Rapid City Swim Center and run completely on the Rapid City Bike Path. At the start, runners will run toward the Memorial Pond, when they hit the path that goes around the Memorial Pond.
5K runners will turn right toward the Civic Center and complete two laps around the pond. When they reach the Bike Path turn off the second time, turn right, and follow the bike path again.  Runners will reverse the course and run back to the Swim Center. Once the 5K runners reach the Roosevelt Pond, they will turn left and run halfway around the pond on the bike path to the finish line. The 9K runner will not circle Roosevelt Pond but run straight to the Finish Line (the same course they started on).
9K runners will turn right toward the Civic Center and complete 1.5 laps around the pond. The 9K runners will break off the pond's bike path on the far side of the pond (after crossing the creek bridge) to run the bike path down to the turn-around point (a bridge that crosses the creek at Abourezk Law Firm offices). NO runners SHOULD cross the bridge but reverse the course back to The Memorial Pond.  Once the runners get back to Memorial Pond Bike Path, they will again circle the pond 1.5 times before heading back to the Swim Center. When they reach the Bike Path turn off the second time, turn right, and follow the bike path again.  Runners will reverse the course and run back to the Swim Center. The 9K runners will not circle Roosevelt Pond but run straight to the Finish Line (the same course they started on).

This race is a fundraiser for the GREAT Swim Team. GREAT Swimming is a year-round program that operates under IRS 501 C3 non-profit organization guidelines, which provides a competitive swimming program that serves the Rapid City Area youths. Swimmers are ages 5-19 and compete in USA Swimming Sanction programs. Swimmers are coached by trained professional coaches with over 30 years of coaching in Rapid City. Established in 2006 with 2 Swimmers it become a Non-Profit organization in 2011 and has grown to at one point over 100 swimmers (2018-2019 Season). Post-COVID 19, GREAT Swimming is slowly returning to its status as the biggest and most dominant team in the Black Hills area, one of the top 6 teams in the state, as well as winning the Team Percent Trophy two out of three years. Funding will help the team to grow as well as assist families that can not afford activities for their children. Also needed for the team to survive is equipment for the swimmer, as well as, timing equipment for the swim meets held here in Rapid City.
