Gene Corrigan left a lasting legacy in college athletics. Corrigan spent his entire career involved in college sports as a coach, administrator and conference commissioner. From the teaching and coaching ranks, Corrigan moved on to become athletic director at Washington and Lee from 1956 – 1958 prior to his move to the same role at the University of Virginia from 1971 – 1981. Following his time at Virginia, Corrigan became the athletic director at Notre Dame from 1981 – 1987. He later served as the commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference from 1987 - 1997, and President of the NCAA from 1995-1997.
College sports was obviously very important to Gene Corrigan, as he spent most of his life as a player, coach or athletics administrator. But it wasn’t just the thrill of competition that he loved. Many times he remarked that “college sports has done more to educate people than anything other than the GI bill,” in reference to the many opportunities that have been provided through the vehicle of collegiate athletics. Education meant a great deal to Corrigan and he passed that passion down to his family. Now to honor his and Lena’s legacy, the Corrigan Family Foundation will seek to provide those with the “want-to” - but not the wherewithal - the means to pursue their dreams. http://corriganfamilyfoundation.org
