If you're looking for a marathon that combines the thrill of running with the breathtaking beauty of Hawai‘i's natural landscapes, the Hawai‘i Bird Conservation Marathon is an experience you can't miss. This race offers a rare opportunity to run a course that starts high in the lush Volcano National Park and descends into the vibrant town of Hilo, surrounded by greenery, wildlife, and a peaceful atmosphere. Perfect for those seeking a Boston qualifier, a memorable run, or both, this intimate and well-organized marathon promises an adventure like no other.

Why You'll Love the Hawai‘i Bird Conservation Marathon

  • Stunning and Serene Course: The race starts at the Volcano Golf Course, situated near Volcano National Park, at an elevation of about 4,000 feet. The course is mostly downhill, with the last 2–3 miles transitioning to flat terrain as you near the finish in Hilo. Along the way, you'll run through lush greenery, enjoy breathtaking views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, and listen to the songs of native Hawaiian birds like the ‘Apapane and Hawai‘i ‘Amakihi. As one participant noted, “It’s mostly running solo as there are fewer runners, but the scenery makes every mile unforgettable.”

  • An Event Designed for Runners: This small, exclusive race is capped at around 150 participants, offering a peaceful, intimate atmosphere. It’s a perfect event for those who thrive in low-key settings and enjoy a more personal connection with the course and fellow runners. Aid stations are well-placed, and the event has been widely praised for their dedication and hospitality, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable race day for everyone.

  • Perfect for Boston Qualifiers: Thanks to the consistent downhill profile, this race is a favorite for those aiming to qualify for the Boston Marathon. With impressive qualifying rates (nearly 50% in recent years), the course is built for speed. However, it also offers enough scenic beauty to keep it engaging for those who prefer to savor the journey.

  • Unique and Meaningful Swag: Finishers receive a beautifully crafted sterling silver pendant medal—small, understated, and a meaningful memento of the race. This thoughtful touch reflects the event’s commitment to quality over quantity and provides a lasting reminder of your achievement.

Helpful Insights for a Great Race Day

  • The Downhill Advantage (and Challenge!): The marathon’s downhill profile is a dream for speed enthusiasts, but it can be tough on your quadriceps. Incorporating downhill training into your preparation will help condition your muscles for the descent, ensuring you can enjoy the speed boost without discomfort.

  • Adapting to Weather Variations: Starting at an elevation near Volcano Village means cooler temperatures at the start, but as you descend into Hilo, the day warms up significantly. By mile 17 or 18, the sun will likely be out in full force. Dressing in layers that you can easily remove and planning hydration strategies are key to staying comfortable.

  • Peaceful Solitude on the Course: With parts of the route set on open roads and minimal crowds, the race offers a serene and reflective atmosphere. While spectator support may be sparse, this tranquil environment allows you to connect deeply with the natural surroundings and focus on your run without distractions.

The Hawai‘i Bird Conservation Marathon isn’t just a race—it’s a celebration of Hawai‘i’s natural wonders, its commitment to conservation, and the spirit of running. Whether you’re chasing a Boston qualifying time or seeking a peaceful and scenic marathon experience, this event offers something for every runner. As one participant shared, “I loved this race in beautiful and scenic Hawai‘i with its downhill course. The race director and volunteers did an amazing job—I’d love to be back and run this again!”

From the lush greenery and enchanting bird songs to the friendly and supportive race community, every step of this marathon is infused with a sense of connection and accomplishment. The unique combination of serenity and challenge ensures you'll finish with memories—and perhaps a new PR—that will last a lifetime.
