Kiwanis empowers communities to improve the world by making lasting differences in the lives of children. Kiwanis strives to be a positive influence in communities worldwide — so that one day, all children will wake up in communities that believe in them, nurture them and provide the support they need to thrive. Our Kiwanis club fulfills the Kiwanis mission by serving our community through Kiwanis Community Service Projects.
For over 60 years, the members of West Charleston have been serving the Children of the Kanawha Valley and the World. The West Charleston Kiwanis club supports many local and global causes We provide scholarships to help students going to college or post-high school education. We sponsor Key Clubs in four high schools in the valley, Capital High, George Washington, Hurricane, and Nitro. These Key Clubs themselves have provided many service projects throughout the valley. We support the K-Kids Club at Edgewood Elementary. We provide new clothing for elementary school kids from three West Side elementary schools at Christmas.
We are an eclectic mix of ages, genders, occupations, backgrounds, and interests. We are all passionate about making our community and the world a better place for children so they can thrive. We are devoted to serving the children in our local community and also children all across the country and worldwide through unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives. Our Kiwanis club supports Key Club service projects, facilitates the Key Club meetings, provides mentorships, and provides college scholarships for the Key Club students. We are currently sponsoring the Nitro High School Key Club. During the Summer when the weather permits, the Greater Nitro Area Club sponsors free swimming for all kids. Additional activities on water safety and fun are also provided. The Club sponsors an annual contest for students to create a work of art that demonstrates their concept of community service. Photos of these works are then judged, by the community through online voting. The winners are recognized by the City of Nitro and have their projects displayed for the coming year.
